Shakespeare’s Guise
Shakespeare’s Guise, a what-if play, is Jot Theatre’s current work-in-progress show, co-written and devised by our founders.
Using physical storytelling, puppetry, poetry, clowning, and a touch of magic, Shakespeare’s Guise transports audiences into a magical alternative past where “Shakespeare” is not one man, but a pseudonym used by a group of female writers- Betsy, Skye, Kat and Penelope led by Mary (based on Lady Mary Sidney). They are determined to finish their play, Twelfth Night. As they discuss endings to their story, different Violas magically emerge from the page. The audience is brought into the action with audience interaction and a Shakespeare themed bingo.
Blending imagination with history, the piece explores what it meant, and still means, for women to fight to have their voices heard.
After a sold-out run at the Camden Fringe in 2025, we are excited to continue developing the show and to keep championing the need for more published female playwrights.
"A compelling celebration of womanhood, created with passion and bravery."
